Sleep Tips from an Insomniac

Sleep Tips from an Insomniac

Whether it’s an Saint Laurent bag, a pair of Alexander McQueen combat boots, or EVERYTHING from the Tommy x Gigi line, I’m a classic want-what-you-can’t-have kind of girl.

This especially applies to sleep. I always want sleep when I can’t sleep!

Sure, I can tolerate my desire to sleep in the daytime (thank you double-shot of espresso), but at night? I can’t help it! I’m a total closet insomniac (but c’mon, at least the closet is fashionable). It’s actually midnight as I’m finishing this post!

Lucky for you, my fellow night owls, I’m at the point now where I can officially call myself a restless spirit in recovery. Now that I’m writing more and more, my sleep is so important to me, and every minute is precious. I make it my absolute priority, and because I’m generous… This is my advice for the nights you spend tossing and turning instead of zzz-ing… follow my lead and I promise you’ll have more mornings that you say “Namaste” instead of “Nama-stay right here!”

1.      Wash All of Your Troubles Away!

For me, there’s nothing better than taking a relaxing shower before bed. It’s not too bad on the hair, either! I like to let my hair towel dry at night so I can wake up dry, straighten it quickly, and be on my way! The best part about my nightly showers? I always include a little aromatherapy that I can’t quite get in the morning. Beauty Encounter has the best Chill Pill shower bombs that with a quick placement in the corner of your shower activate rich lavender fragrances that calm the mind, body, and spirit.

2.      Look Cute, Sleep Cute!

And what do I do right after I shower?! Slip into my favorite pajamas, of course! I’m OBSESSED with Red Dress Boutique’s pajama rompers and onesies (my friends are too… I got them all hooked). Nothing feels better than an all-in-one set of PJs right before I start counting sheep.

3.      Knock Yourself Out Cold (With the Right Kind of Drink!)

After I’m all set in bed, I look for a million and one reasons why I could possibly be unable to sleep. One of the biggest culprits? I get crazy thirsty right before bed! For emergencies, I like to keep my miracle cure, Dirty Lemon – Sleep, in my fridge at all times. They’re pricey at $65 for six bottles, which is why I really use them for emergencies only. With one of these drinks, I’m knocked cold within 20 minutes.

If you’re like me and can’t always afford close to $10 a bottle for a beverage (that isn’t a mixed drink at a bar that you can flirt out of the sucker in the corner), I found some great at-home DIY sleep aid drinks from Everyday Roots! Any one of these three recipes are powerfully compelling.

4.      Hot Drinks are for Hot Ladies

If you’re a warm-beverage-before-bed kind of gal, there are plenty of options for you. My favorite (and Miley Cyrus’s favorite) brand of teas are the Yogi brand teas because of their empowering messages on the back of every tea tag.

5.      The Power of the Himalayan Pink Salt Lamp

There are so, so many benefits of owning a Himalayan Pink Salt Lamp! They reduce allergies, SAD, increase energy levels, and best of all regulates ions in the air for better sleep! Here’s a link to all of the amazing benefits of having one of these pretty little rocks in your bedroom.

6.      Cut the Cord!

I know it’s hard, girl – but if you want sleep, you’ve got to commit. You’ve got to pull the plug (literally). I’m serious… turn the TV off, put down your phone (actually, set your phone charging far away from your bed so you have to get out of bed to hit the alarm in the AM!). Spend some quality time with yourself, reading your favorite book! My favorite right now is The Swans of Fifth Avenue, which is like the Gossip Girl of the Breakfast at Tiffany days (complete with Truman Capote as one of the main characters!).

7.      Sleep Like the Princess You Are

Once you’re all tucked away in bed, snug as a bug in a rug, and somewhere between real life, the life of your favorite book, and dream land, throw on your sleep mask and call it a night. These elegant sleep masks, offer a classy and sassy slumber too tempting to resist.
